He was a student leader, poet and revolutionary who believed that India needed its own army for self-defense. In 1929–30s, he was a member of Comrades Movement and he survived several assassination attempts by British police. In 1940s, he engaged himself in full-fledged revolution all over the country. He used violence as a last resort and always propagated non-violence as a political weapon. Romesh Sharma has done full justice to the role of Bhagat Singh. He is exceptionally brilliant, even if he is an amateur in acting. Raj Babbar is very natural and believable as Bhagat Singh's elder brother, Ajit Singh. The two actors have played their parts to perfection; they were able to infuse life into the characters who existed on pages of history books before them. Neetu Singh was stunningly beautiful in the movie; she played her role perfectly. Shikha Swaroop was excellent as Bhagat Singh's wife, Chandrashekhar Azad's sister; she fit into her role very well and played her part with finesse. Sanjay Dutt played the role of Bhagat Singh's youngest brother, ...The first release was "Bhagat Singh", a biopic based on the life of Bhagat Singh. The movie totally focused on the time when Bhagat was hanged by Britishers to death in jail. It also gave prominence to his elder brother Ajit Singh's role in jail with him being the only means for Bhagat's support to be able to fight back against violent British officers. The movie won National Film Award for Best Film on National Integration and was screened at various international film festivals. The second release was "Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh" just after few months of release of the first movie. It focuses on story starting from early childhood to his death. While first movie focused mainly on time when Bhagat was hanged by Britishers to death in jail, this movie focused more on his early life and journey which led him to be hanged at young age of 23.
