To the left is a full-length recording of me playing saxophone and to the right is a visual representation of my rendition. It's an easy-to-learn method that can be applied by anyone. I am an engineering student that has been trying to model saxophones for personal enjoyment and for this project, but it's proving difficult. I cannot get such a perfect sound without access to expensive equipment! I hope that I am able to turn what I've learned into something instrumental in achieving whatever goal you may have in your life. This will require practice, time, and effort, yet it will help immensely when you're ready to make your own sounds or even model similar instruments with other frequencies. This is a tutorial on how to model saxophones. From this information, you'll be able to do the same for any other musical instrument you wish to model, including your own voice. It's always useful to have sounds that are similar or identical to your own original recordings. You can use these sounds in music or sound design for video games, movies, etc. This part of the tutorial teaches you how to record the saxophone with the same qualities that it has. This is done by recording one or two bars of saxophone notes that are played with proper fingering. These are most often used later on in the modeling process. The next step is to analyze these recordings to find out what most resembles a 'standard' saxophone sound. These are most often called 'type samples'. If you want to make your own sounds, type samples can be used as guidelines which you can then modify. Lastly, using this knowledge, try to recreate the input audio using your own tools and instruments, either by playing it yourself or sampling it. This is a very important stage of modeling, as it'll transfer the qualities of your saxophone into a digital format that can be used in 3D. In this part of the tutorial you will learn how to model saxophones with a variety of sample libraries. Each library has specific characteristics. For example, some libraries have the ability to modulate samples, while others do not. In this step, you'll learn about all of these different libraries and how to create your own samples from them. All simulations are created using only free software and a computer with a soundcard and mixer connected to it. To be as exact as possible, all parameters are tweaked so that the sounds sound as close to an actual instrument as possible. Please note that only a computer with a soundcard and mixer is required, along with a MIDI keyboard for playing samples live. In this part of the tutorial, you'll learn how to generate audio from a saxophone sample. You'll find out how to create sound from existing software or even from downloaded audio files. All of the sounds have been recorded by myself and include various saxophones ranging from soprano to contrabass.
